_FeCl3 + ____NaOH → ____Fe(OH)3 + ____NaCl 
Goal: to have an equal number and types of atoms on the reactant (left-hand) side as there are on the product (right-hand) side
Step 1: Take stock of the number of each type of ion on both the left-hand and right-hand sides.

Step 2: Since there are 3 Cl atoms on the left, we would need a coefficient of 3 for the Cl-containing compound on the right-hand side of the equation.

Step 4: Next balance Na by putting a coefficient of 3 for NaOH.

Balanced equation: FeCl3 + 3NaOH → Fe(OH)3 + 3NaCl
Studying the interaction of salt with the basis
Take 5 -6 ml of iron (3) chloride solution in a test solution and add sodium hydroxide.
If we can give Fe2+ ion to the NaOH solution, Fe(OH)2 precipitate can be formed. To give Fe2+ ions, soluble Fe2+ compound should be used. Therefore, FeSO4, Fe(NO3)2 can be used as compounds. FeCO3 cannot be used because it is insoluble in water and gives very low Fe2+ ion concentration too.
In the presence of oxygen gas, Fe2+ ions readily oxidizes to Fe3+ ions. That's why green color of Fe(OH)2 is tuned to brown color of Fe(OH)3.
