e.g.
Mr. Zero, Dick Dubious, Sir Silvercup.
Apokoinu
− a construction in which the subject of one sentence is at the
same time the subject of the second, a kind of ellipsis.
Aposiopesis
− a sudden breaking off in the midst of a sentence as if from
inability or unwillingness to proceed.
Argot
− the vocabulary peculiar to a particular class of people, esp. that of
an underworld group devised for private communication.
Archaisms
− words which are practically out of use in present-day language
and are felt as obsolete. Archaisms may be subdivided into two groups. The
first group is represented by «material archaisms», or ((historical archaisms»

82
— words whose referents have disappeared. The second group is formed by
archaisms proper.
Assonance
− 1. resemblance of sounds 2. partial rhyme created by the
stressed vowel sounds.
Astheism
['qsTi:zm] n. deprecation meant as approval.
Aasyndeton
− the omission of conjunctions. Asyndetic connection of
sentences and parts of sentences is based on the lexical meanings of the
unites combined. The stylistic function of asyndeton is similar to that of
ellipsis: brevity, acceleration of the tempo, colloquial character.
e. g.
«You can't tell whether you are eating apple-pie or German sausage, or
strawberries and cream. It all seems cheese. There is too much odour about
cheese» (Jerome).
В
Belles lettres
− literature or writing about literary subjects.
Bookish words
− words belong to that stratum of the vocabulary which is
used in cultivated speech only — in books or in such

special types of oral
communication as public speeches, official negotiations, etc. They are
mostly loan-words, Latin and Greek. They are either high-flown synonyms of
neutral words, or popular terms of science.
e. g.
A great crowd came to see
—
A vast concourse was assembled to
witness.
Began his answer — commenced his rejoinder.
