Aims and objectives

6. The objectives were: to explore the ways BA-MA are perceived by participants, to initiate a discussion on obstacles and opportunities based on the contributions of three short presentations. And to decide on priority actions to be undertaken at each medical school. The objective was to initiate a discussion based on the presentation of student and professional approach to this topic, the results of the Short Survey on Implementation of the 2 cycle system and the conclusions of a previous student workshop on the same topic

7 The aim was to discuss problems encountered when implementing other elements of the Bologna Process such as the Diploma Supplement, ECTS (as a transfer of achievements, accumulation of achievements and a measure of the outcomes) student mobility (how to overcome obstacles) as well as the desired involvement of students.

8. The aim is to analyze pros’ and cons’ of the Bologna process and to present the situation in Portugal and Spain.

Description of specific tasks undertaken and outcomes

6 The workshop was structured as follows

Part I

  • Introducing the theme Paul de Roos / Coordinator (Vu Medical Center Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Student member of MEDINE Executive Board and Medical Education Director of European Medical Students Association 2005-2006)

  • Large Group - Present and discuss outcomes (20 min)

  • Reflect Ba/Ma Discussion Amsterdam on outcomes (3 min)

  • Wrap up and take home message (5 min)

7 The workshop was structured as follows:

  • Introduction of the participants (10 min)

  • Presentation of the Bologna Process objectives (5 min)

  • Explanation of the principles of the ECTS as a transfer system, and accumulation system (10 min)

  • Exercise for participants: Assigning ECTS points to all courses offered on the 1st year of a discipline based and system based curriculum (20 min)

  • Discussion of results (10 min)

  • Short explanation of the link between ECTS and learning outcomes (5 min)

  • Exercise: defining ECTS value of the course on the basis of learning outcomes using a communication course as an example (10 min)

  • Discussion of results (5 min)

  • Exercise on defining the possible role of students (10 min)

  • Summing up and take home message (5 min)

8. The article presents the objectives of the Bologna process and its evolution since the Declaration was signed in 1999 by 29 countries until the London Ministerial Meeting in 2007 with 46 countries. The progress achieved so far in Portugal and Spain is also discussed.

Evaluation of outcomes

6 The discussion with workshop participants pointed out that students and professionals have similar concerns in relation to implementation of the Ba/Ma structure in medical education. The views as expressed in the conference proceedings of the EMSA/IFMSA student workshop on Ba/Ma structure in Medical Education are similar to those of the participants of the AMEE workshop. The strong debate during the limited discussion time pointed out that a more thorough discussion on this topic with all stakeholders is necessary. The exercise we did to rank top 3 Bologna action lines with perceived positive impact, negative impact and the ones requiring most urgent attention, were also similar to outcomes produced by the students at their workshop in July. Concluding: there’s common concern for and interest in a more thorough discussion on pro’s, con’s and prerequisites to be defined before we can consider whether or not Ba/Ma structure could mean something positive for medical education. The matter has sufficient urgency to be discussed and a pro-active stance of the professionals is desirable. There still is a common concern that inappropriate implementation of this Ba/Ma structure can be harmful for medical education.

7 Very good acceptance from participants (AMEE written questionnaire)

8. Good quality of the article (based on the fact that it was accepted for publication)

Aims and objectives

Overall Aim: To secure good standards in patient treatment and medical education.
Specific Aim: To promote research attitude as the basis for life-long learning in all fields of medicine for better patient treatment.
Overall Objectives:

  • Explore and develop links between medical education and research.

  • Examine relationships between education and research in medicine.

  • Examine issues such as the importance of outcomes related to critical appraisal and use of evidence, whether basic research skills are a core competence for medical graduates.

  • Promote the growth of collaborative research and development and the quality of research education since understanding of research is essential to the development of best clinical practice.

Stage 1 aim: Information gathering and analysis in Undergraduate Programmes

Description of specific tasks undertaken and outcomes

  • Defining content and format of survey part 1

  • Identifying and approaching institutions with the help of AMEE

  • Identifying IT means for the survey

  • Development of a user interface

  • Linguistic optimisation of survey part I

Workshops in 2005 on the link between medical education and research were held in Brussels (2x), Budapest and Amsterdam

Evaluation of outcomes

The outcome was part I of the survey questionnaire. It was ready to be used as an effective means to survey medical schools in Europe for their link between Medical Education and Research.

Describe and justify any changes to or variations from the original workplan

The original aim was broader, but had to meet the reduced financial budget. Original target groups included students as well. Our current survey covered only the first stage of the original plans, targeting the institutional coordinators and responsible academic staff.
One of the four objectives was tightened in its formulation.

Aims and objectives

Stage 2 aim: Information gathering and analysis in Postgraduate and Specialty Programmes

Stage 2 objective: Design of questionnaires for Postgraduate and Specialty Programmes

Description of specific tasks undertaken and outcomes

  • Defining Content and Format of survey part 2 and part 3

  • Optimisation of user interface and IT means

  • Identifying and approaching institutions with help of AMEE

  • Linguistic optimisation of survey parts 2 and 3

  • On-line start of European survey

Workshops and meetings in 2006 on the link between medical education and research were held in London, Prague and Copenhagen. In addition, the interaction of our taskforce with the MEDINE taskforce on Tuning gained more attention in a workshop in Edinburgh.

Evaluation of outcomes

The outcome was part 2 and 3 of the survey questionnaire. It was ready to be used as an effective means to survey medical schools in Europe for their link between Medical Education and Research. In this stage the survey was started.

Describe and justify any changes to or variations from the original workplan

Evaluation of credit points for research related courses was more difficult than expected, mainly because course titles and course contents could not be easily compared due to lack of standardization.

Impact on the project of changes to the workplan

The workplan was carried out with less emphasis on credit points.

Task Force 5 Stage 3

Aims and objectives

Stage 3: Conclusions and recommendations of TF5 survey, disseminated in Annual Conference.

Description of specific tasks undertaken and outcomes

  • Completion of Survey with help of AMEE

  • Analysis of Survey Data

  • Development of Colour Chart Analysis

  • Writing of TF5 report

  • Presentation of Survey data

  • Additional literature study of European documents

  • Formulation of conclusions and recommendations

  • Establishment of institutional profiles

  • Outline of feedback and dissemination strategy

  • Evidence based recommendations with new quality development items

  • Identification of student interests in final report

Workshops and meetings in 2007 on the link between medical education and research were held in Brussels, Oslo, Budapest and Antalya.
An institutional profile map was designed, which will contain an arrow locating the particular institution in the map of all institutions (each map will contain one arrow). This enables the institutions to do a kind of bench marking for themselves.

All contributing institutions will receive feedback in this way, in addition to the TF5 report.

Evaluation of outcomes

In this third year of our project, we were able to make evidence-based recommendations to individual institutions and to observers in general, to improve the link between medical education and research. To reach this outcome, we have developed an analytical technique (colour chart analysis) that extracts the information of the survey and allows objective processing.

Describe and justify any changes to or variations from the original workplan

The fact that research related courses and programmes are characterized by credits gained less attention in this stage due to difficulties defining the exact content of the various research related items.

Impact on the project of changes to the workplan

The impact of putting less emphasis on credits was not large because conclusions and recommendations could still be drawn.

Please provide information on the partners that participated in dissemination activities in the whole project duration, in alphabetical order of country code using the table below.
