Identify 'switchback' words
Stay alert for 'switchbacks'. These are the words and phrases frequently used to alert you to 
shifts in thought. The most common switchback word is 
'but'. 
Others include 
although, however, nevertheless, on the other hand, even though, while, in 
spite of, despite, regardless of. 
But: 
Used to introduce a phrase or clause contrasting with what has already been mentioned 
Used to indicate the impossibility of anything other than what is being stated

Used to introduce a statement that contrasts with or seems to contradict something that has been said 
previously
