IELTS Writing Task 2: the keys to a high score 
Memorised phrases for any essay, original or difficult words, complex grammatical structures, a long 
introduction with background and thesis statement: 
these are NOT the keys to a high score!
If you want to get the highest score possible with your current level of English: 

Focus on answering the question well. This means that you need good ideas (which is why planning 
is important). Explain your ideas in detail in the main body paragraphs. 

Work on 
topic vocabulary
rather than 'any essay vocabulary'.

Forget about 'complex structures' and 'difficult words'. When you try too hard to make your writing look 
difficult, it usually just seems strange or wrong. 

Keep your essay structure simple: a short introduction and conclusion, and two well-developed main 
body paragraphs.
