IELTS Writing Task 2: what's the difference? 
Is there a difference between the two questions below? How would you approach answering each 
one? 
Question 1
With the availability of information on the Internet, public libraries are no longer necessary. To what 
extent do you agree or disagree? 
Question 2
Some people consider public libraries to be unnecessary due to the availability of information on the 
Internet. Others, however, believe that libraries can still play an important role in society. Discuss both 
views and give your own opinion.

So, is there a difference? Here's my answer: 
First, question 1 can be answered in three ways: completely agree, completely disagree, or balanced 
opinion (partly agree). If you have a strong opinion, you don't need to mention the opposite view. By 
contrast, question 2 clearly tells you to discuss both views. 
Second, even if you have a 'balanced view', question 1 requires a slightly different approach 
compared to question 2: 
For question 1, the opinions must be YOURS e.g. On the one hand, I accept that.... On the other 
hand, I still believe that... 
(notice the use of "I". DON'T write about the opinions of other people). 
For question 2, you can write about the opinions of other people e.g. Some people believe.... Others 
would argue.... 
(Your own opinion is also required, but you can just put it in the introduction and conclusion).
