Bransby Williams – Stage actor specialising in character
sketches, some from Sherlock Holmes. London Pavilion, from
26 September 1898 (repeated in May 1902).
Nicol Williamson – Bombastic British actor who played
Holmes in Nicholas Meyer’s film adaptation of his own novel,
The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976), concerning a meeting with
Sigmund Freud. (See Michael Blagdon.)
Douglas Wilmer – After Alan Wheatley’s stab at Holmes in
the first BBC television series, Wilmer featured in a pilot for
the revamped second series, The Speckled Band, on 18 May 1964
(as part of the Detective series.) A 12-part series followed in
1965 (20 February to 8 May). Nigel Stock played Watson,
continuing for the third series with Peter Cushing. He went
on to star in Gene Wilder’s hit-or-miss comedy film The
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother (TCF/Jouer, 1975),
which saw Wilder play Holmes’ brother Sigerson (‘Sigi’).

Arthur Wontner – Gaunt British actor of the 1930s,
Wontner had already played several detectives (including Sexton
Blake in 1930), before he was cast as Holmes in five films by
London-based company Twickenham Film Studios. Although a
little old for the part, his portrayal was entirely convincing and
received many glowing accolades – ‘accept no substitute’,
declared one American film critic. The Sleeping Cardinal (USA:
Sherlock Holmes’ Fatal Hour) was made in 1931, based on The
Final Problem and The Empty House with elements lifted from the
