Sherlock Holmes

Peter Lawford – Rat Pack actor who appeared as Holmes in
a Fantasy Island segment entitled Save Sherlock Holmes, first trans-
mitted in America on 6 February 1982. Donald O’Connor,
best remembered as Cosmo Brown in Singin’ in the Rain
(1952), played his Watson.
John Lawson – Music-hall performer who wrote and starred
in An Adventure in the Life of Sherlock Holmes, first performed at
the Paragon Music Hall, Mile End Road, London, on 6 January
1902; later rewritten with W R Perceval as Holmes.
Christopher Lee – British horror actor, the most prolific of
his generation, who played a deliberately unlikeable Holmes in
the poor 1962 West German production, Sherlock Holmes and
the Deadly Necklace (1962). He and Thorley Walters (Watson)
spoke English while the rest of the German cast acted in their
native tongue, but when the film was later released their voices
were dubbed by unknown American actors. The director was

Terence Fisher, responsible for Hammer’s The Hound of the
Baskervilles three years earlier. More recently, Lee has resumed
the mantle of the Great Detective in two TV movies, Sherlock
Holmes and the Leading Lady (1990) and Sherlock Holmes: The
Incident at Victoria Falls (1991), the latter filmed in South Africa.
Patrick Macnee played Watson, as he had done before with
Roger Moore in Sherlock Holmes in New York.
