건강한 성격 (healthy personality)= 가능적 자율성 강조 (functional autonomy) He suggested that a drive forms as a reaction to a motive, which may outgrow the motive as the reason for a behavior. The drive then becomes autonomous and distinct from the motive, whether the motive was instinct or something else. The idea that drives can become independent of the original motives for a given behavior is known as functional autonomy. “Functional autonomy regards adult motives as varied and as self-sustaining, contemporary systems growing out of antecedent systems but functionally independent of them.”
1. 자기의 확장=extension of the sense of self. Truly mature persons, according to Allport, are able to participate in activities that go beyond themselves. They are concerned not only about their own welfare but also about the welfare of others, a view advocated by the major religions of the world as well. Self-love is a prominent and inescapable factor in every life, but it need not dominate. Everyone has self-love, but only self-extension is the earmark of maturity.
2. 타인과의 따뜻한 관계=a warm relatedness to others. The mature individual is also capable of relating warmly to others. Allport distinguished between two kinds of warmth. The first is intimacy––the capacity for love, whether of family or friends. The second kind is compassion. Allport believed that mature persons have a certain detachment in their dealings with others that allows them to be respectful and appreciative of individual differences in behavior and thought.
3. 정서적 안정=self-acceptance. Mature persons are emotionally secure. They avoid overreacting in matters that are beyond their control. They have a high tolerance level for frustration because they have reached the point of self-acceptance. Immature persons, in contrast, tend to act impulsively and to blame others for their own mistakes.
4. 현실적 지각=realistic perception of reality. Mature persons are accurate in their perception of events. They do not continually distort reality. They have the knowledge and skills necessary for effective performance and living, and the capacity to lose themselves in their work. In short, they are problem-centered, not ego-centered.
