Seattle Public Library – Seattle, USA

The Central Library branch of Seattle’s Public Library is, to put it mildly, eye-catching. Gone are the days of dusty bookshelves and drab interiors, and in its place is something that could have only ever been sent from the future.
Designed by leading Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, this futuristic structure of steel and glass features diagonal lattice panelling and an assortment of unconventional cubist angles.
Opened to the public in 2004, only three years later the local landmark turned into a national treasure as it was voted #108 on The American Institute of Architects’ list of ‘150 favorite pieces of American Architecture‘.

Stockholm Public Library, Sweden

Stockholm's public library was designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund, who is also known for his work on the Skandia cinema and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Woodland Cemetery. The round main hall has books in every Nordic language and a white, textured roof that was designed to look like clouds.

Royal Portuguese Reading Room, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This sumptuous library (yes, a library can be sumptuous!) is one of South America’s most famous and is certainly among the planet’s most picturesque. Created in 1837 as a repository for Portuguese literature, visitors come from all over to admire its decorative style of design. Four stories of books are held lovingly by extravagantly carved bookcases that are crowned by a magnificent chandelier and a dazzling blue and red stained-glass cupola.
