CLINICAL FEATURES OF NON-PROLIFERATIVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY IN 
PATIENTS WITH COVID-19.

Introduction. According to the literature, many cases of various lesions of the eye in COVID-19 
have been identified, which has been confirmed in various studies [1,2]. There are isolated 
publications by foreign authors about changes in the inner layers of the retina in patients who have 
undergone a new coronavirus infection [3]. Complications from the choroid and retina, which are 
caused by developing coagulopathy and vasculitis, are of great interest, since the course of the 
disease significantly changes in the direction of aggravation [4,5]. In connection with the above, the 
study of diabetic retinopathy, the characteristics of the course of its various stages and complications 
deserves special attention. 
Purpose of the study. To study the clinical features of the non-proliferative stage of diabetic 
retinopathy in patients undergoing COVID-19. 
Material and research methods. The study included 30 patients with non-proliferative stage 
diabetic retinopathy. The average age of the patients was 53,5±7,2 years. The patients included 18 
females and 12 males. In all patients, the presence of COVID-19 confirmed by ELISA or PCR 
data. The patients underwent specialized treatment in a hospital. According to generally accepted 
standards, all were diagnosed with moderate or mild severity of the disease with changes in the 
coagulogram. All patients underwent an ophthalmological examination including ophthalmoscopy 
and optical coherence tomography (OCT). 
Results. Ophthalmological examination at the beginning revealed specific changes in the fundus 
in the form of the presence of cotton-like single paravasal foci in 16,7% of patients. These changes 
did not correspond to the typical signs of the nonproliferative stage of diabetic retinopathy. Also, 
from changes in the fundus in 23,3% of patients, preretinal single streak-like hemorrhages, not 
typical for a typical clinic of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, were determined. 
Of the specific changes on OCT in patients, the following signs were revealed: the presence 
of hyperreflective polymorphic foci with clear boundaries of an ellipsoidal shape (83,3%), large 
hyperreflective foci with clear boundaries that deform the retinal profile (13,3%), as well as single 
preretinal paravasal hemorrhages localized along the superior temporal vascular bundle (6,7%). It 
should be noted that in most cases these changes were monocular.
