wore himations, a direct ancestor of the Roman toga. But
as it turns out most toga party “togas”
look a lot more like hima-
tions than togas.
The toga was semicircular, whereas himations,
like the bed sheets
generally used these days, were rectangular.
But a himation party wouldn’t be quite so much fun:
Plato claimed
that a gentleman should never extend
his arm outside his hima-
tion, making both groping and beer-guzzling diffi cult.
