The monograph published for the first time in this issue of the collection "Literary Translation and Comparative Literature"
S.N. Durylin "Othello" by Shakespeare at the Maly Theatre. Episodes from
100 Years of Shakespeare's History at the Maly Theatre” was completed
in late 1934 - early 1935, on the eve of an event that became like
later turned out to be epochal, but not yet recognized as such and briefly mentioned in the last lines: “The return of Shakespeare to the Soviet Maly Theater began with the same
began over a hundred and ten years ago, his arrival there - with the production of "Othello", carried out by a director who specialized in Shakespeare - S.E. Radlov". It will take quite a bit
time, and S.N. Durylin will dedicate this production and performer
starring Othello A.A. Ostuzhev a number of enthusiastic articles.
It will become quite obvious that without taking into account the latest material
the book cannot be published, but S.N. Durylin, unknown
reasons, will not return to the text of his study, which
will remain unpublished, preserved in several archival
copies in the funds of the Maly Theater (RGALI, f. 649, op. 1, item 917),

f. 2980, op. 2, units ridge 17, 20 - two copies). Present publication
is carried out according to typescript from the funds of the Maly Theater, containing later revisions. However, this edit mainly
the nature of the radical reduction of the manuscript, in connection with which it was
a decision was made to publish an early version of the text, and a number of significant amendments made to it subsequently, with a reduction,

___________________________
1 The article was prepared as part of the implementation of work on a grant from the Russian Scientific
Fund No. 22-18-00027 "Shakespeare and Russian Literature of the Early 20th Century (Traditions, Reminiscences, Translations, Literary Critical Reception)".
The monograph devoted to the productions of Othello at the Maly Theater was the first and, at the same time, the most significant work of S.N. Durylin, dedicated to the Russian theatrical reception of Shakespeare's
tragedy. After that, small popularizing notes appeared in the press, responses to the production by S.E. Radlov and performance
in it the role of Othello A.A. Ostuzhev, at the release of the book "Ostuzhev - Othello", prepared by the All-Russian Theater Society
[1, p. 3–4; 2; 3, p. 8–9; 4, p. 15]. The very attention of the researcher to Shakespeare's tragedy was largely due to the fact that it was she who
more often than other plays by the English playwright was staged on the stages of Russian theaters in the 1930s. In addition, according to S.N. Durylin, "Othello" was one of those plays that began the Maly
theater, and therefore the history of the Russian reception of "Othello" on the stage of the Maly
theater - this is both a conversation on the topic "Shakespeare and the Maly Theater", and an attempt to look through the Shakespearean repertoire at the entire history of Russian drama theater - with its ups and downs, gains
and losses. Finally, S.N. Durylin talks about the stages in the history of the Maly Theatre, largely determined not only by the change of generations of actors and changing demands of the public, but also by Shakespeare's place in the theatrical repertoire. The researcher comes to the conclusion that
are of undoubted interest both for modern theater studies and for the study of Russian Shakespeare.
