The qualification paper is dedicated to the study of the peculiarities of Spain borrowings in English language which presents a certain interest both for theoretical investigation and for practical usage. We have the full basis to approve that many linguists have brought the invaluable contribution to studying various properties of the borrowings in English language, that has created necessary theoretical preconditions for describing the semantics of English words.
The topicality of the investigation is expressed by the profound interest in learning the peculiarities of borrowings (on the material of Spanish borrowings) which are widely used to perform linguistic richness of the English language.
The object of given investigation is the peculiarities of borrowings in English language.
The subject is the structural-semantic and functional-contextual features of the Spanish borrowings in English language.
The aim of this research is based on a detailed study of the Spanish borrowings in English, and the structural patterns with them in.
The first chapter “Etymological study of the borrowings” considers the main aspects of Diachronical typology, its basic terms and problems. It also discusses the importance of borrowings in enriching vocabulary.
The second chapter “The analysis of phonetic, morphological and semantic changes of Spanish borrowings in English language” is devoted to the semantic features of Spanish borrowings in English language.
The third chapter “The analysis of assimilation and mixing of English and Spanish languages”.
The Conclusion presents the findings and the outcomes of the research.
Remarks:
Spanish Borrowings entering the word-stock of English underwent phonological, morphological and semantic changes. Recently, there is a tendency in English to maximum preserve the original phonology of the borrowed word, which resulted in some earlier borrowings having two accepted pronunciations.
Mock Spanish, yet another result of Anglo-Spanish contact, is very common in the US.The study of four American online newspapers showed that the instances of Mock Spanish used in the headlines of articles as well as in the articles are numerous. Yet, the study of the British online newspaper showed a limited number of instances of Mock Spanish usage (chiefly used while citing somebody’s words).
These remarks by no means diminish the high scientific level of the research. It undoubtedly has both theoretical and practical value and is sure to make some contribution to the development of linguistics, particularly cross cultural studies. It meets all the requirements for Master’s dissertations and deserves an excellent mark.
