Discursive analysis is a qualitative and interpretive method of 
analyzing texts (in contrast to more systematic methods like content 
analysis). You make interpretations based on both the details of the 
material itself and on contextual knowledge. There are many different 
approaches and techniques you can use to conduct discursive analysis, but 
the steps below outline the basic steps you need to follow. 
THE PROCESS OF DISCOURSE ANALYSIS 
1. Formulating your research question

2. Gathering material 
Interview transcripts, newspapers, other pre-existing texts (eg, official 
documents), recordings of naturally occurring conversations, social 
media material etc. 
3. Reading the material 
Reading everything 2-3 times to get a sense of the material and what is 
going on in the text - structure, order and content. 
4. Coding 
Selecting and organizing data, done prior to the actual analysis.
