Instructions: Read the questions in the Reading Guide before you read the assigned chapter. The questions will help you focus on some key ideas in the chapter. Please write out your answers under each question. Submit it BEFORE class. Happy reading!
Before reading:
1. Answer this question before reading the chapter: What does grammar mean to you? Describe in one sentence.
Your answer:Grammar is the root of any language.

2. Answer this question before reading the chapter: Students often say, “Teacher, we have studied these same grammar lessons year after year, but we still have trouble with them and make mistakes using them.” In your opinion, why do such problems occur?


Your answer:Because they don’t properly pay attention to their mistakes once they made them.And they repeat this situation when these questions come once more time.Not to make any mistakes in grammar,in my opinion,one should learn grammar rules well and try not to make mistakes.

3. Dimensions of grammar are discussed from pp. 258-261. Read this part carefully and answer the questions below.

  1. Describe the three dimensions of grammar using your own words. Do not copy the sentences directly from the chapter.

Your answer:
Dimension 1-through this we may learn and know how grammar units are formed
Dimension2-through this we are allowed to know about different meanings of any given single grammar unit
Dimension3-throghg it,we may learn why given grammar unit is used or when it is used



  1. In your learning/teaching context, which dimension is the most highlighted in your learning/teaching context?

Your answer:In my learning and teaching English grammar,dimension1(form) is the most highlighted.Because learner must know initially form of the grammar unit and then they use it properly

  1. Conversely, what is the least emphasized dimension of grammar in a typical grammar lesson in your learning/teaching context and why do you think that is the case?

Your answer:However,dimension2(meaning) is the least emphasized dimension of grammar in my typical English grammar lesson.In my messons I teach learners to do tests,so meaning os the grammar units is not important at times and we don’t pay close attention to them

4. Three different approaches to grammar teaching are discussed from pp. 262-265. Read this part carefully and answer the questions below.



  1. Which one of the three approaches is commonly used in the classrooms in Uzbekistan? What are some benefits of that approach?

Your answer:the approach of practice is commonly used in the classes I Uzbekistan.Benefits of this approach are that:if a learner can practice what he/she has learned,it shows that how he/she has mastered the lesson or the rule,especially by practice,academic skills are improved fast and efficiently


  1. Describe benefits of Grammaring using your own words. Do not copy the sentences directly from the chapter.

Your answer:Grammar using enables the person to write correctly,meaningfully,without mistakes;to speak clearly,to explain exactly what he/she is going to say

5. Ways to promote explicit grammar instruction are described on pp.265-266. Read this part carefully and answer the question: Which one of the tasks can be adapted in your own grammar lesson and how might you implement the task?


Your answer:The task “collaborative dialogue” could be adapted in my teaching because this way is fun and useful for learners.i may implement it by giving any grammar rule and the learners should discuss it

6. The effect of the native language on L2 learning has traditionally been seen to be one of interference. How does the observation on p.261 regarding learners’ reliance on their prior knowledge and experience differ in its perception of L1 influence?


Your answer:Definitely,any learner rely on their prior knowledge while learning language or grammar .And it is wrong and it is the reason for making mistakes in learning language

7. What is one thing that stood out from this chapter that you want to apply to your own teaching? Discuss specifically what you found useful for your current or future teaching.


Your answer:First,teaching grammar rule and practice it and in the next lesson give cards to speak about the theme based on the taught rule
