REVIEW
Of the book “BRISTOL MURDER” by Philip Prowse
The present book, written by Philip Prowse, is Bristol murder for intermediate level. It is enjoyable reading material for learners of English. At Intermediate Level, the control of content and language has the following main features: Information Control, Structure Control, Vocabulary Control.
In Information control which is vital to the understanding of the story is presented in an easily assimilated manner and is repeated when necessary. Difficult allusion and metaphor are avoided and cultural backgrounds are made explicit.
In structure control. Most of the structures used in the Readers will be familiar to students who have completed an elementary course of English. Other grammatical features may occur, but their use is made clear through context and reinforcement. This ensures that the reading, as well as being enjoyable, provides a continual learning situation for the students. Sentences are limited in most cases to a maximum of three clauses and within sentences there is a balanced use of adverbial and adjectival phrases. Great care is taken with pronoun reference.
In vocabulary control. There is a basic vocabulary of approximately 1,600 words. Help is given to the students in the form of illustrations, which are closely related to the text.
The book has studied that Peter, a long distance lorry driver, gives a lift to a 16 years-old hitch-hiker outside Bristol. As they talk, Peter discovers that John has run away from home after a violent row with his uncle. The police are searching for John. His uncle has been found dead and the police want to question the boy.
The present book for intermediate level consists of the people in this story, seventeen short stories, points for understanding, glossary and list of titles at Intermediate Level.
This book is about one murder that happened in Bristol. The main character, Peter Jones, worked at a company called Universal Transport Limited. While he was driving his lorry and heading to Manchester, he met a boy. The boy’s name was John Steven, and he was hitching a ride because he wanted to get away from his uncle, who was a strict teacher.
John lost his parents when he was young, and from then, he was living with his uncle. One day, John and his uncle got into fighting over his uncle’s strict rules, and after John hit his uncle hard, he ran away. Later he found out that is uncle was found dead and he was searched for the criminal for this murder. The newspaper said that his uncle was killed with the leg of a chair, but because he thought he was completely innocent, he started to look for the guilty person in Manchester.
With Peter and his old friend’s help, John succeeded to find the real person who killed John’s uncle. While Peter and John were collecting information about the case, one person named Bob Steel played an important role in the story, but I can’t tell you about him and the ending of this book, so please read this! It was an exciting and heard warming book!
My favorite part is The Police Station and, as well as, my favorite character in this book was Peter Jones because he did what he was able to do in order to help John Steven to find the murderer. I liked this book because I learned that you can’t trust everybody. John and Peter trusted Bob Steel and they shouldn’t do that. You should read this book because it was exciting to read, quite easy to understand and I didn’t think it was the murderer who was found in the end.
I enjoyed this book. It is a kind of mystery story. I thought Peter was clever and brave. I did not like Bob Steel because he told information to the police about the murderer which was not true.
I will recommend this book for others. Because it is very interesting and rich of adventures. John was suspected by the police that he had killed his uncle. Peter believed he was innocent and they tried to find real murderer.
