particular, were horrified when they read this response poem o f ash-Shashi
by their general, Taghfur. Then the soldiers were amazed and asked each
other:
“Who wrote this answer, what country was he from, we didn’t know
there was such a talented person in the caliphate, did we?”
The Tashkent scholar was outraged by the Byzantine emperor’s harsh
and threatening remarks. As a Muslim, he responds to a Christian
commander who invades the holy city of Mecca, raising his national pride:
“We drove you to Rome by force,
The example with the ostrich is distant.
Like a runaway hedgehog
Before us is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
We have not broken the honor of the Prophet,
We had strength and power.
We conquered the land in the evening,
And Egypt, Kairavan and Andalusia.
We were winners every time
Byte is a series of destroyed cities.
Victory in Alexandria
We won the war in Jerusalem, in Urushshalim!
We bravely defeated you,
Our science and genius have long been known ...
We don’t like your bad poem,
Our poetry is perfectly acceptable
A gift for a knowledgeable person”.
Seeing the confusion and commotion among the nobles o f the palace,
Emperor Nikifor, who rose from the rank of an ordinary soldier to the rank
of general and took the throne of Constantinople with his fortitude,
suddenly announced that he had abandoned his plan to march on Baghdad.
The Byzantine army’s leaders were shocked by Kaffal ash-Shashi’s
diplomatic response. Because the Byzantines did not believe that the
answer poem was written in this way. That one response will change the
situation. The Imam’s honorable diplomatic mission was to protect the
people of the Caliphate from the threat of war and the payment of tribute.
This service for the peace of the country and the well-being of the people
made the name of the scientist world famous. May be, it doesn’t matter
what happened today, but this is just one example of how Kaffal ash-Shashi
was a brilliant diplomat and a smart poet.
Undoubtedly, one of the factors that compelled the emperor to
change his mind was Kaffal Shashi’s sharp wits and his knowledge of
political science. Sources confirm that in his letter to Emperor Nikifor, the
scholar told him that he should deal with the internal problems of his state,
stated that he should focus on his opponents who were ready for any evils
to achieve his throne rather than marching militarily on the Arab Caliphate.
It is possible that these words influenced the Byzantine emperor. With the
intellect of a scholar and poet who has mastered the fields of history,
politics, diplomacy and law, a possible war between the two countries will
be averted. This historic event inspires a sense of national pride in all of us
as generations of scholars. We believe that this historic event should have
a special place in the history of Turan’s diplomacy.
Kaffal ash-Shashi was such a glorious and courageous poet, a
wonderful politician person. Unfortunately, almost no one was engaged in
his literary, poetic, linguistic, logical works, no scientific research was
conducted, and his work on dynamic dialectics (“Husni jadal”) was not
studied. At the same time, his works of jurisprudence have not been studied
sufficiently and adequately. While studying the history of state and law, we
learn that the works of the Imam were popular in the Muslim East, but these
works are still unknown to us - his descendants. The analysis of the data
shows that the opposite is true, that his works are still famous and popular
in the countries and cities where he studied and taught science, and showing
that their manuscripts are available in the libraries of higher education
institutions taught Islamic law in some countries of the Middle East.
