Students participating in PBL activities:

• Take on New Roles

o Plan, articulate problem and constraints, monitor progress, conduct self-evaluation, document

process and outcomes.

o Take steps to understand the person or group for whom this is a problem.

o Decide what needs to be done first, second etc. and articulate what they will need to learn and

be proficient at in order to test and solve through product development, experimentation

and/or problem solving.

• Support Collaborative Group Work

o Develop collaboration skills and provide service to the group as well as community.

o Contribute to group, listen openly, attempt to understand and incorporate ideas of others.

o Shift from competitive to cooperative goals.

o Contextualize own knowledge, co-develop several ideas and a share solution.

o Build role in community that previously did not exist, through dialogue and communication

of results, as well as through peer teaching.

o Communicate with additional collaborators who may enter the process, professionals with

relevant information, local community or family members, and other teachers.
