Overall, it is clear that water rises and falls in a continuous cycle that is driven by the heat of the sun. The water can take five forms during the process, namely vapour, rain, snow, hail or liquid water.

The heat of the sun causes water in rivers, lakes and oceans turn into vapour, which rises upward into the sky. The higher the vapour moves, the cooler the temperature of the air becomes, causing the vapour to condense into clouds. These are then blown by the wind towards the mountains. After reaching high ground, the clouds release water droplets, which fall to the earth either as snow, rain or hail depending on the temperature.

Once the water has returned to land, it enters the ground water system. At this stage, the water can move in a variety of directions. A proportion of the water flows down from the mountains into lakes and rivers, which carry the water to the ocean. Alternatively, droplets can enter the soil, where the water is first absorbed by plants and then released back into the atmosphere. A further option is for the water to evaporate directly back into the air after it has landed, and therefore start the process again.
