Objectives:




  1. Understand how battering is used to maintain power and control over a victim

  2. Gain insight into the societal/media impact on battering behavior; 

  3. Learn standard characteristics of a batterer; shown through actual case studies

  4. Develop strategies for understanding someone who batters to better assist victims

  

Agenda

9:30AM – 12:00PM: Guided Discussion/Activity/Case Studies & Lecture:, Myths/Facts on abuse. Behaviors and warning signs of the batterer. How victimization begins. Common characteristics of the batterer.

 

12:00PM-1:15PM, Lunch/Video- Men, Battering and Change



 

1:15 – 2:15, Guided Discussion/Activity/Case Studies, Common excuses used by the batterer.  Discussion on ways in which a batterer controls and exerts their power- seen and not seen. Different types of battering behavior. Understanding jealousy as the cornerstone of obtaining power and control.



 

2:15PM – 4:00PM, Guided Discussion/Activity/Case study



Leaving the batterer and potential reaction, safety and what to expect from batterer throughout cycle of abuse.  Support for batterers change; efficacy of batterers programs. Coordinated community response and systems to support victims. Batterer intervention programs and best practices for providing support to batterers

About the Presenter: Allison Bressler holds a Master's degree in Counseling and Human Development, and has worked as a counselor and advocate for hundreds of victims of abuse since 1999. Formerly, the Director of Non-Residential services in two NY and NJ domestic violence agencies, she has supervised all aspects of programming for adults, teens and children as well as running the Union County domestic violence response teams. Ms. Bressler also spear headed Westchester County's premier annual teen dating abuse symposium. As the Director of Programs at The Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, she played a pivotal role in developing and implementing their strongest initiatives. She is currently Co-Founder of A Partnership For Change, a NJ based non-profit that provides prevention and awareness on the issues of domestic violence. Ms Bressler maintains a private practice in Westwood, NJ and has also worked as an expert witness for domestic violence cases. Her passion to empower individuals and her knowledge of domestic violence has made her a sought-after speaker at many venues in New York and New Jersey. Visit www.apartnershipforchange.org
