give up, give somebody up
Amanda went to see the doctor and he told her to give up smoking
immediately. So she stopped that day. She has never smoked since.
The doctor said, 'Give it up! Otherwise it will kill you.'
Heaven is

. When you give something up, you are giving it to Heaven.
You are renouncing it. You don't need it any longer on this earth. It's a
sacrifice.

By extension, give up without an object means to surrender.
After being hit dozens of times, Billy the Bad Boxer at last gave up.
He sacrificed his dream. He stopped boxing.

But give somebody up has a slightly different image, and a totally
different meaning. Here,
up
is the direction of authority, the law or justice.
So to give somebody up means to deliver them to justice, to the police.
Years ago in Britain, there was some kind of electronic spy who
confessed to his wife what he had done. She wanted a divorce so she
gave him up to the law. She got her divorce, and he got fourteen years.

Give can sometimes have the sense of 'yield'. If a lady and a gentleman
arrive at the same door at the same time, the gentleman - if he is a
gentleman - will give way. He will give the lady the way through the door.
He will yield.
Sometimes in Britain, you will see road signs that say GIVE WAY. This
means that you must give the 'right of way', you give priority to the cars on
the other road.
Rarely, a bridge will collapse. Somewhere in the structure, a metal beam
gave way. It was not strong enough.
