FRONT OFFICE SEMANTICS
Rate type:
Single (unique) rate for a specific type of room that is programmed into a hotel’s PMS.
Rack rate is the price at which a hotel sells its rooms when no discounts of any
kind are offered to the guests. Rack rates, however, typically vary by the type of room.
For example, the rack rate for a hotel’s best, or most popular, room will be higher than
that for its least popular room. Larger rooms, suites and rooms with special ameni-
ties, views, or other features typically have their own unique rack rates. Figure 3 lists
the rack rates that might be associated with a mid-size convention hotel (e.g., the
Altoona Hotel) with a fairly limited number of different room types.
