Be sure that its something you really want to do. Find an entry-level, no-experience-necessary
position in any department: food and beverage, maintenance, housekeeping, front desk. You’ll
find that working in the hotel industry is something that you will either love or hate, and you
won’t know which attitude you’ll have without first experiencing it.
During my experience here in Las Vegas, I have met some University of Nevada Las Vegas
students who have worked at our property to complete an internship or in an entry-level job. At
the end of the semester, most confirmed that they wanted to pursue a career in the lodging
industry. However, some decided to change their major because they knew the industry wasn’t
for them. It is good that they had this initial experience so they could better direct their efforts
to a career they would enjoy.
Hoteliers must love interacting with all kinds of people. They must have a service atti-
tude, an aptitude for solving problems, and the ability to embrace the diversity that they will
encounter daily. This is why I love the industry. There are never two days the same. Never!
If you like an organized routine, this is not the job for you. But if you like ever-changing
challenges that allow you to be creative, and if you enjoy interacting with guests and
employees (this is a labor-intensive industry), the hotel industry offers a career you’re likely
to enjoy.
