POS (point of sale) A location in the hotel (excluding the front desk) at which hotel goods
and services are purchased. In many hotels, a POS is interfaced with the PMS.
POS terminal Computer system containing its own input and output components and,
perhaps, some memory capacity, but without a central processing unit. A large restaurant,
lounge, or gift shop may have several POS terminals so that servers and cashiers have
rapid access to a unit when the operation is busy.
Post To enter data (including guest charges) into the PMS to create a permanent record of
the information. Posting may be done automatically or manually. Used as in, “Please post this room charge to Mr. Walker’s folio.”
Preblocked room Specific room number that has been assigned to an arriving guest before
arrival. FOMs ensure that needed rooms are preblocked to meet guests’ requests for
specific location or to ensure that guests receive the room type they have reserved.
