REAL-WORLD ACTIVITIES
1. As you have read, much of the night audit process is automated; the PMS does
much of the work that, until relatively recently, had to be done manually by the
night auditor. Talk with a general manager, FOM, or night auditor and ask these
questions: In what ways could automation further enhance and simplify the night
audit process? Have any disadvantages arisen from increased automation of this
activity? What is the future of automation in the night audit process?
2. Many hotels have one or more revenue-producing departments that are not inter-
faced with the PMS. Talk with an FOM and review the factors to be considered
as an interface decision is made. Discuss the steps that would be required to
implement an interface with the PMS.
3. Talk with a night auditor about the biggest challenges that arise as the night audit
is completed. If possible, meet with several night auditors at different types of
properties and compare and contrast the information you gather.
4. Ask several FOMs about the tactics they use when talking with registered guests
who have exceeded their payment card authorization levels. Do they have sugges-
tions about how to make this task comfortable for the hotel representative and
inoffensive to the guests?
5. Talk with one or more general managers and FOMs about the policies used at
their properties related to the development and distribution of night audit reports.
Is there an approval and authorization process required for new reports? Can
department heads generate reports themselves using the property’s intranet?
What are the biggest challenges to generating and distributing night audit
reports?
