Needs Analysis Report
Needs analysis can be a vital asset for teachers of English for specific purposes to identify their learners’ key requirements or needs and determine the areas in which they are lacking skills. In most cases, needs analysis is used so as to clarify the target field of specialists’ needs, desires and weaknesses of their language proficiency. According to Hyland (2006:73): “Needs analysis refers to the techniques for collecting and assessing information relevant to course design: it is the means of establishing the how and what a course. It is a continuous process, since we modify our teaching as we come to learn more about our students”. Every stages of needs analysis has been conducted to determine language needs of the staff (medics) “ Euro Med” hospital in Denau. We collaborate as a group and use data collection tools such as, needs analysis report, interview, questionnaire and observation for this needs analysis.
Moreover, while carrying out needs analysis, there were four doctors of “Euro Med” hospital who took part voluntarily in the research. Three of them are females and one is a male. After conducting needs analysis, important information about the target learners were identified through interview, questionnaire and observation tools and findings. At last, we gathered all data and made a number of pie-chart or bar-graphs in order to reveal the needs analysis.
Interview
In the first research, interview was selected as the most important data collection tool. The interview was consisted of three parts of questions: background, consequences and strategies for coping with insufficient language skills and coping at work.
Results of the semi-structured interview with the employees of “Euro-Med” center showed the following:
Two doctors were recorded in this interview. While interviewing, we knew that the female doctor had some problems of sharing her opinion with foreigners. That’s why the doctor had strong desire for blowing up her communication skills for interacting with the patients and also she has faced some barriers in explaining illness. However, the male doctor has deepest need to enhance his grammar and vocabulary skills to conduct his diagnosis correctly.
According to the interview results, we observe the need for speaking skill showed high percentage 25% and it speaks about a big need especially for communication skills. Moreover, their pronunciation was weighted 20%. However, during the interaction the male interviewee told that he came across some grammar mistakes while he communicates in English. Basically, female need to enhance listening skill and pronunciation of words in order to improve the speaking fluently and coherently was 15% (listening). Their reading skill showed 15%. Writing was also showed the 10% of overall percentage that doctors have to enhance their writing skills so as to record patient illness history and prescribing the medicine. Generally, they need to benefit from course by enhancing their integrated skills in English so that they conduct their work for clinical communication concerning medical procedures and treatments, and doctor-patient interactions (See Appendix I).
This data analysis was collected and calculated by using of quantitative method of statistics.
