Cause and Effect
READ THE PASSAGE
Look for causes and effects as you read the passage.
Public Wheels
Last summer, my mom went back to work full time, so she could no longer be my full-time taxi. She
also thought I was old enough to go some places on my own, as long as she knew where I’d be. I started
using the city bus to get around town. It was easy to learn the routes, and I quickly figured out how to get
to and from the places I wanted to go. It is only a two-block walk from our apartment to the nearest bus
stop. From there I could ride downtown to go to the library or museums, I could enjoy the hike-and-bike
trail along the river, or I could visit friends on the other side of town. After I saw how convenient it was to
travel by bus, I bought a summer bus pass. I definitely got my money’s worth!
One day, I took the bus to a clean-air rally and learned why taking the bus is really a good idea. With
increased use of public transit, the United States would consume 1.5 billion fewer gallons of gasoline per
year. That would greatly reduce the amount of hydrocarbons in the air, which, in turn, would reduce smog.
Not only do buses decrease the number of cars polluting the air, many cities are upgrading their buses to
those that use hybrid technology or a cleaner-burning fuel, such as compressed natural gas.
While I still hope to have a car when I’m an adult, my parents have warned me about how expensive
they are. Besides the obvious cost of the car itself and the insurance, they are expensive to maintain. In
addition to filling the gas tank, or charging the battery if I get an electric car, they have to be serviced
several times a year to make sure they are running well and are safe. The less I drive, the less I’ll have to
spend on fuel and maintenance, and the less time I’ll waste sitting in traffic and looking for a parking
space. I plan to keep public transit in the mix!
