WEEK 20
DAY 1
READ THE PASSAGE
Think about why the author wrote the passage.
Under Your Skin
You may not think about your skin as being an organ, but it is actually the largest organ of the human
body. Skin covers and protects everything inside of you. It also works to keep your body at a healthy
temperature, and it provides your sense of touch.
Human skin is composed of three basic layers. The outside layer, the epidermis, is the part of your skin
that you can see. Below the epidermis, new skin cells form and move toward the top (which takes from two to
four weeks). As the new cells move up, older cells near the top die and rise to the surface. Every day you
lose 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells from the surface of your skin! Most of the cells in your epidermis make
new skin cells, and the remaining 5% or so produce a substance called melanin, which gives skin its color.
The darker your skin, the more melanin the cells have produced.
The next layer down is the dermis, which contains tiny blood vessels that keep your skin healthy by
delivering oxygen and nutrients and taking away waste. The dermis also contains oil glands, which keep your
skin lubricated and waterproof. Although you cannot always feel it, you are sweating a tiny bit all the time
through pores in the dermis. The nerves that allow your sense of touch are also in this layer.
The bottom layer of skin, called the subcutis, is made up mostly of fat, which helps your body stay warm
and absorb shocks. This is also where hair grows from tiny tubes called follicles. You have hair follicles
everywhere on your body except for your lips, the palms of your hands, and the soles of your feet. You have
over 100,000 follicles on your head alone!
