Conclusions
- Residents’ perceptions have drastically changed after the games
- Economic benefits generated by the games were a big disappointment
- Vandalism, prostitution, crime, and increases in the price of real estate and 
goods and services were much less than residents expected
- Since the expected benefits were high, the cost of facilities did not seem too 
high 

after the games, residents treated the outcomes as losses because they 
were not high enough to justify the expense

Results
- In both destinations, a significant decrease in the perception of the economic 
costs is observed 


tourism are usually under-estimated
- During an economic crisis perception of the economic benefits of tourism does 
not increase, although in smaller destinations in lower level of tourism that may 
be the case
- Social and cultural costs, the 2014 results are substantially and significantly lower 
than in 2006

in a weak economic environment, residents become more 
tolerant
- Social and cultural benefits, both destinations score higher in 2014 than in 2006
