way along cable routes or for towers in the case of microwave or other terrestrial
wireless systems. Maintenance of a ground-based infrastructure also is substantially
more expensive and complex, due to the greater quantity of working elements and
the opportunities for failure. Satellite communication plays a unique and vital role
in restoring basic communications following a disaster. This was illustrated in the
United States following the hurricanes of 2005. Installations like that shown in
Figure 1.9 can be transported to a disaster site by truck, helicopter, or airplane,
and erected in minutes. Normal broadband applications like high-speed Internet,
telephone, and video are provided with this type of installation. Satellite communi-
cation is often the only way to deliver these services when the existing terrestrial
infrastructure is destroyed.

Low Cost Per Added Site
Along with rapid installation, the cost of constructing a single site can be quite
modest. Simple DTH receivers are consumer items that even homeowners can
install. Earth stations for two-way communication may require more care in prepa-
ration for secure mounting of the antenna and selection of a suitable location
for indoor equipment. Alternatively, hand-held mobile satellite terminals can be
purchased for as little as $1,000 each. In general, the cost per site is low enough
to keep the particular application within the budget of the particular user.

Uniform Service Characteristics
The footprint of the satellite defines the service area, and within that area services
are delivered in precisely the same form. That overcomes some of the fragmentation

of service that would result from connecting network segments from various terres-
trial telecommunication operators. An example is WalMart’s satellite network in
the United States that interconnects its stores located in small towns and villages
to the Arkansas headquarters.
1.1.1.8
Total Service from a Single Provider
A satellite network can be operated by a single company or by a government
agency. The customer, which also could be a nationwide organization, can then
deal with a single entity to arrange service. A satellite-based service can be provided
nationally or regionally, without regard to fragmentation imposed by the local
market situation. An example is satellite radio from XM Satellite Radio (Figure
1.10).
