Introduction:
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease it is based 
on the "response to damage" as a reaction to the deleterious impact of traditional risk 
factors on the cardiovascular system [1]. More pathophysiological pathways link 
chronic inflammation, presented as a low-grade systemic inflammatory response 
(LGI), with the process of atherogenesis and the formation of atheroma, unstable 
plaque and/or acute coronary syndrome [2,3]. Measurement of High-sensitivity C-
reactive Protein (hs-CRP) levels can accurately detect low-grade inflammatory state 
[4]. Hs-CRP is also one of the independent, non-traditional risk factors (FR) for 
prevention of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Specifically, its predictive 
value in CV risk assessment is independent of traditional FRs such as HDL or LDL 
cholesterol [5]. Serbia belongs to a group of countries at high risk for developing 
CVD [6,7]. It is a middle-income country, which has undergone significant economic 
changes and crises in the last 30 years [8] and in this context there are population 
groups, such as soldiers, that are particularly at increased risk for CVD. 
Goal:
Since so far have not published any papers of relationship between 
individual CVD risk factors and LGI markers (for example, hs-CRP) in professional 
military population of the Republic of Serbia, the aim of our study was to investigate 
this fact.
