Certificate Course in Laser Dentistry
Lasers have been used in dentistry since 1994 to treat
a number of dental problems. Laser dentistry is a
minimally invasive treatment option that is now
available for a wide variety of procedures in dental
practice. This one-year certificate course course will
introduce BDS graduates
to the understanding of
laser physics and the use of lasers in dentistry. The
trainees will also learn the basic scientific principles
involved in laser dentistry, get familiar with the safety
aspects of using lasers in dental practice and have a
clear understanding on the advantages of laser
applications in dentistry over the conventional
methods.
The training will predominantly take place within
the department of Dental and Oral Surgery. The
department provides for the dental care and
treatment of more than 100 outpatients and
inpatients each day. The treatment options that are
provided in the department include a wide range of
surgical and non surgical treatments including
prosthetic, orthodontic, paediatric, periodontic and
endodontic procedures. The trainees will be exposed
to the applications and use of lasers in the different
specialities of dentistry. They will be involved in the
diagnosis and treatment planning of oral conditions
that require treatment with laser therapy.
Teaching
will also be incorporated through clinical case
discussions and interactive lectures/seminars. All
trainees are expected to maintain a log book during

Certificate Course in Neonatology
Neonatal mortality is the biggest contributor to infant
and under-5 mortality rates in India and throughout
the world. It is estimated that about 5 million new-
borns die in the first 28 days of life in India every year.
The World Health Organization and the Indian
Academy of Paediatrics have thus identified
improvement in neonatal health as a major step to
reduce childhood mortality and morbidity.
This one year certificate course for Paediatric diploma
holders (DCH) is primarily aimed to provide training
for paediatricians who go back to work in small
hospitals located in small towns, rural areas and
mission hospitals where the majority of work is in
maternal and child health. It will equip trainees
to confidently manage
problems of normal new-
borns as well as sick new-born infants. The trainees
will acquire skills in a wide variety of neonatal
conditions such as resuscitation, pre- and post-op
management of new-borns, care of very low birth
weight babies, sepsis, jaundice, rational drug therapy,
basic ventilation, etc. It will also give them an
opportunity to gain hands-on training in head
ultrasound and neonatal echocardiography. They are
expected to make presentations at academic sessions
and will also receive training in developmental
assessment of infants.
