Indefinite article
The indefinite article (‘a/an’) is used to refer to a particular person or thing when the 
listener/reader doesn’t know which one is being described, e.g. ‘A m an was reading the 
paper’, ‘I saw a plane take off’, ‘I’m going to buy a new mobile phone’.
As with the definite article (see above), we can also use ‘a/an’ to refer to a m em ber of a 
group - in order to refer to the whole group, e.g. ‘A m an’s gotta do what a m an’s gotta do’, 
‘A good nurse will always spend time with her patients’, etc.
Adjectives
Adjectives describe and modify the nouns they come before or after. They can have many 
forms.

Comparative and superlative forms
Adjectives can have comparative forms (‘big - bigger’, ‘nice - nicer’, ‘noisy - noisier’, ‘young
- younger’) and superlative forms (‘biggest’, ‘nicest’, ‘noisiest’, ‘youngest’). Sometimes this 
change is indicated by the addition of ‘-er’ and ‘-est’, sometimes with an additional spelling 
change (e.g. ‘biggest’, ‘noisier’), sometimes not (e.g. ‘younger’, ‘youngest’). W ith longer 
words, we use ‘m ore’ (‘more colourful’, ‘more enjoyable’) and ‘m ost’ (‘most colourful’, ‘most 
enjoyable’). A few adjectives have their own comparative and superlative forms which do 
not conform to these patterns (e.g. ‘good - better - best’, ‘bad - worse - worst’).

W hen we use a string of adjectives, there is a generally accepted sequence.

Notice that if only some of the categories are present, the order is usually retained, e.g. ‘the 
large wooden crate’.
