Abstract.
 
The article examines the Central images of P. Merimee’s Novella "Carmen" from 
an imagological point of view.
 
The study of the image of the nation, mentality, and traditions of cer-
tain ethnic groups in works of art makes it possible to create a complete picture of the national im-
age of the people who inhabit it.
 
Using examples from the original text of the novel, the authors of 
the article prove that P. Merimee laid the Foundation for the stereotypical perception of Basques 
and Gypsies, which has survived to this day.
