The love of Olympia
One day - Nathanael is writing a letter to Clara - the peddler Coppola 
suddenly appears again. Nathanael is startled, but since he is thinking of 
Clara's explanations and does not want to be superstitious, he lets him in. 
When Coppola offers Nathanael not only weather glasses but also "sköne 
oke", beautiful eyes, the student panics. It turns out that Coppola means 
glasses, but the sight of them also brings back bad memories. Nathanael 
only calms down when Coppola puts away his glasses and shows him 
binoculars instead. To finally get rid of the odd peddler, Nathanael selects a 
glass and looks through it, straight into Olimpia's room. Now he sees 
Olimpia up close for the first time, who is sitting quietly at the table again. 
Nathanael is so entranced by her beauty that he even forgets Coppola's 
presence for a while. He buys the glass from the peddler. The letter to Clara 
is no longer important to him, Nathanael prefers to look at Olimpia through 
his new glass. The curtains in her room remain closed for the next few days, 
the binoculars are no longer of any use to him, but he only thinks of Olimpia 
and really wants to see her again.
The feast at Spalanzani
A few days later, Nathanael learns that Professor Spalanzani is going to throw a 
party that Olimpia is also supposed to attend. He manages to be invited. The 
evening begins with Olimpia playing something for the guests on the grand 
piano and singing an aria. Standing some distance away, Nathanael looks at her 
through his binoculars again. He is smitten with her, and Olimpia seems to be 
giving him amorous looks too. They dance together, and then Nathanael sits 
down next to her. He is completely smitten with the beautiful woman

woman and talks nonsense, but Olimpia listens to him attentively and only says every now 
and then: "Oh!"

He sat next to Olimpia, her hand in his, and spoke passionately and
enthusiastic about his love in words that no one understood, neither he nor 
Olimpia. But this one maybe; for she looked him straight in the eye and sighed
once over the other: Oh - Oh - Oh!“ (p. 48)
When the festival is over, Spalanzani asks Nathanael to visit his daughter 
more often. Nathanael gladly accepts the invitation and from then on spends 
many hours with Olimpia. He tells her about himself and reads her his 
poems. Olimpia speaks almost nothing but is always a very good listener and 
never shows signs of boredom. Nathanael feels deeply understood by her 
and falls in love with her more and more. He reacts offended to warnings 
from friends who cannot understand his feelings because Olimpia seems too 
stiff and lifeless to them.
