But since Nathanael keeps hearing the invisible guest, he also asks the old 
nanny about the Sandman. Here he learns more: She tells him that the 
Sandman comes to naughty children at night and throws sand in their 
eyes until they fall out. The sandman then feeds his own children with his 
eyes. Nathanael, who is convinced that this sandman is visiting his father 
in the evening, is even more afraid of the mysterious guest.

For years, the Sandman occupied the boy's imagination. When the now 
ten-year-old Nathanael moves into his own room not far from his father's, 
he decides to ambush the sandman in order to finally see him. But he 
never succeeds. Finally, his curiosity is so great that one evening, before 
the mysterious visitor comes, he hides in his father's closet. When the 
Sandman then enters his father's room, Nathanael realizes that he is 
looking at an old acquaintance: it is the lawyer Coppelius, who is 
sometimes invited to dinner at his parents' house. The children fear this 
man because of his mischievous nature and repulsive appearance. So it 
makes perfect sense to Nathanael that Coppelius must be the sinister 
Sandman.
"The Sandman had put me on the path of the wonderful, 
adventurous, which so easily nests in the child's mind." (Nathanael,
p. 13)
Coppelius and his father now begin mysterious alchemical experiments 
that frighten the boy even more. When Coppelius suddenly "eyes out!" 
calls, Nathanael screams in terror and falls out of the closet. Coppelius 
grabs him and pretends to rip his eyes out and unscrew his hands and 
feet. Nathanael faints and is subsequently ill for several weeks.

I just want to tell you straight out that, I think, everything dreadful
and terrible, what you speak of, only happened inside you, but the true, 
real outside world probably had little part in it.” (Clara to Nathanael,
p. 22)
Coppelius is no longer with the family for the time being. But about a year later, 
at the usual time, footsteps can be heard in the hallway again. The mother is 
shocked, but the father assures that today is the last time Coppelius will come 
and sends his family to bed. Nathanael obeys, but cannot fall asleep for fear. 
Around midnight he suddenly heard a terrible bang. Coppelius flees the house. 
But the father lies there with a soot-black face

dead in front of the small stove on which the two conducted their 
experiments. From that day on Coppelius disappeared - and Nathanael 
sees him even more as an evil demon who also has his father on his 
conscience.
"Yes Nathanael! You are right, Coppelius is an evil hostile principle,
he can do terrible things (...) but only if you don't ban him from your 
mind and thoughts. As long as you believe in him, he is too and
works, only your faith is his power.” (Clara, p. 33)
Soon after the father's death, the mother took in two orphaned children 
from distant relatives, the siblings Clara and Lothar.
