Light-weight Machine-to-Machine Protocol (LWM2M) 
LWM2M is a protocol by Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) for device management and 
service enablement for Machine-to-Machine type environment. LWM2M is intended for 
devices with constraints on memory, processing power, electric power and bandwidth e.g. 8-
bit microcontrollers with small memory footprint. However, LWM2M can be equally 
seamlessly used for device without these constraints [28].

LWM2M is intended to offer speedy deployment of client-server type specification to 
provide M2M services. LWM2M enables the application layer protocol for communication 
between a ‘LWM2M Client’ on user equipment and ‘LWM2M Server’. The device 
management activities include bootstrapping, registration, object/resource access and reporting. 
LWM2M protocol supports interfaces dedicated for each of these device management activities 
[19]. OMA LWM2M can be used for device management for cellular devices as well as 
Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSN) nodes. It is built on CoAP transfer standard and is supported by 
banking class security standard DTLS. 
LWM2M Client sits as a software on an M2M device and it is managed from the 
applications on the LWM2M server (e.g. Eclipse Leshan). In the protocol stack, it can be seen

that the Objects models such as IPSO sit on the top of the stack. Then on the lower layer, CoAP 
supports the transfer in HTTP-like fashion. The whole transfer is secured by DTLS. The 
messages carrying payload over the established links (e.g. NB-IoT for the thesis) can either be 
datagrams (as in UDP) or SMS where payload can be as simple as plaintext. SMS can also be 
used with or without DTLS. However, the LWM2M client, in this case must support the SMS 
binding.
