Remind students that a cause makes something happen, and an effect is what happens as a
result of the cause. Ask: Why are we supposed to brush our teeth? (to keep our teeth clean 
and healthy) Say: Brushing our teeth is the cause. The effect is that our teeth stay clean and 
healthy. Then remind students of the 
Visualization
strategy, which was taught during Week 2. 
Say: When we make mental images of what we are reading, we can often see the causes and 
effects in a passage or story. Tell students they will read about a girl who has a tough morning. 
Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Then have students read the passage. When 
students have finished, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review 
the answers together.
