Remind students that the use of visual information is another way of presenting information or ideas. 
Brainstorm with students different types of visual information (maps, graphs, diagrams, charts, 
advertisements, etc.). Point out the descriptions of backpacks on the page and ask: Why is it 
important to know how to read an advertisement or a description in a catalog? (to understand 
what it is that is being sold) Then remind students of the

strategy. 
Say: Each picture and each caption gives different kinds of information. If you are shopping for
a backpack, for example, different things may be more important to you than to other people. You 
might be interested in how a backpack looks, while someone else might be interested in how many
