driven by a clockwork mechanism. Care should be taken to avoid im-
posing large external voltages or currents on solid-state relay contacts.
Intermediate heavy-duty relays are advised. Modern practice uses
solid-state techniques or special-purpose computers.
8.3.5
Safety controls
Safety controls are needed to prevent or modify HVAC system opera-
tion when conditions warrant. Flow, temperature, and pressure out-
of-control conditions can be detected, by means of the sensors previ-
ously discussed, and appropriate action taken. ‘‘Appropriate’’ may
mean shutting down the system, closing an outside air damper to pre-
vent freezing, or other actions needed to prevent damage to the system
or the facility.
