Remittances reached US$5.3 billion, around 5 per cent of GDP in 2006, and increased 

to US$5.9 billion in 2007 (putting it among the highest remittances-receiving countries in

 The number of Egyptian emigrants reached 3,901396, in 2006 representing around 5 per cent of 

the Egyptian population (CAPMAS, Census 2006 final results, 2008). The figure is calculated as the 

difference between population inside and outside Egypt and population inside Egypt.
