Extension activity: grammatical structures
Ask students what structures are used in the phrases to refer to the future. What
is grammatically unusual about the last phrase in the table?
Answers
The future continuous is used
we’ll be talking / we’ll be speaking
to make a
promise about an arrangement. The present simple is used
we interview /
Rahim Anwar presents
to state a future fact. The two structures could be used
interchangeably but the present simple suggests the features are pre-recorded
and sure to be broadcast, while future continuous suggests the features will be
live, and therefore strongly expected but not guaranteed.
The last phrase is unusual because there is an article (the) before a proper name
(Nick Cave). This is because there is an adjective (brilliant) before the name.
