Functions of Research Institutes for Communicable Diseases in
Developed countries
This chapter examines the functions of typical research institutes for infectious
diseases in Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom in order to clarify the
functions generally played by such research institutes. Reference is made to the
functions confirmed here as forming a framework for the analysis of the functions and
roles of the research institutes that are the targets of this study in three African
countries; Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia.
