Go straight home from school, college: South-East Delhi police's advice for girls 
Delhi police issued a set of guidelines for girl students going to schools and 
colleges but it was seen as a moral diktat by police instead of providing security and 
safety to girls. This led to thousands of protesters, most of them students, lined in the 
streets of Delhi, demanding the safety of the females in the. They blamed the 
Government and police for being apathetic to crimes against women, and demanded 
new tough laws to punish sexual offenders. 
The public outburst and noteworthy role of the media has led the government 
to succumb to the situation which has increased security arrangements for e.g. Union 
Minister of State for Home R P N Singh travelled in DTC buses

security for common people especially women, Mr Singh travelled in the buses for at 
least three hours in different routes and reviewed the security being provided along 
the routes and bus stops which is something unusual in our administrative and 
political system. 
MEDIA FUELS PROTESTS 
It is for the first time in independent India the media has made profound impact 
the outcome of which can be seen nationwide. For example, On December 22, 2012 a 
programme was published which ran with a message ‘Amanat’ gang-rape case: 
Protests in Delhi intensify, agitators clash with cops’. The programme started with 
the anchor saying “At night, there were a few thousand people on a chilly winter 
night holding candles at India Gate. Some carried placards that had slogans like "stop 
this shame"; others chanted slogans demanding better safety for women, the agenda 
declared by an outraged country after a young medical student, ‘Amanat’, was raped 
by six men in a Delhi bus last Sunday.” attracting every individual seeing TV to 
become part of the protest.
