importance for generations. They were formed in the Cretaceous Period (Mesozoic
Era) about 65-80 million years ago, when dinosaurs walked the earth. In the sea
lived billions of microscopic single-celled animals and plants, called plankton,
with shells made of lime. When they died, their shells fell to the sea bed. The shells
accumulated, very slowly, at a rate of around 0.015mm a year, which built up to a
depth of 15 metre in one million years. The White Cliffs are a symbol of the

nation's strength against enemies and a reassuring sight to returning travellers.
They have been immortalised in song, in literature and in art.
