In  the  figure  1.3  Employee  is  an  object  that  represents  the  data  members

name,  basic–pay  etc.  and  the  member  functions  read_data,  net_pay,  display  etc.

Therefore  the  object  employee  contains  both  data  and  member  functions  that

manipulate these data members.

The basic features of an object are:

Objects  are  basic  runtime  entities.  The  word  “instance”  is  a  synonym  for

“object”.

They represent a person, place or any data items that the program has

to handle.

They occupy space in memory with an associated address.

Objects  communicate  with  each  other  by  sending  messages  to  one

another.

Therefore when you approach a programming problem in an object-oriented

language,  you  no  longer  think  about  how  the  problem  will  be  divided  into

functions,  but  how  it  will  be  divided  into  objects.  Thinking  in  terms  of  objects,

rather  than  functions,  has  a  helpful  effect  on  how  easily  programs  can  be

designed. This results from the close match between objects in the programming

sense and objects in the real world.
