Consider  another  example  as  illustrated  in  figure  1.4. Vehicle  class  is  the

base class which consists of two sub–classes, two–wheeler and four–wheeler which

inherit all the properties of Vehicle such as wheels and Engine. Apart from these

properties it may have other properties such as fuel, model etc. Similarly scooter

and  motorbike  are  derived  from  the  class  Two–Wheeler  and  car  and  bus  from

Four–Wheeler.

Reusability

Once a class is created and tested and ready to use, it can be distributed to

other  programmers  for  using  in  their  own  programs.  This  is  known  as

reusability. It is similar to using library functions in different programs. Further

the  programmers  can  use  the  existing  class,  add  new  features  or  modify  the

existing ones by deriving a new class from the existing class.

Inheritance  supports  the  idea  of  reusability,  where  the  programmers  can

add new features to the existing class without modifying that class. For example

given a string class, the programmer could derive a class, adding a data member

representing a color, to be used when displaying the string.

The  same  could  be  achieved  by  duplicating  the  code  and  modifying  it.

However  inheritance  mechanism  allows  the  user  to  proceed  by  just  adding  the

new feature. There is no need to even access the source code inorder to derive a

class.
