3.2.2 The position of women academic staff in the UK
The situation of women academic staff in the UK and South Africa leaves plenty of room
for improvement. For a long time academic women in British universities have been
under-represented. Although their numbers have increased over the years, they are still in
the minority in senior academic and administrative positions. In a Hansard Society
document entitled ‘Women at the top 2000: Cracking the public sector glass ceiling’,
Karen Ross provides a statistical picture of the advancement of women across the higher
education sector in senior lecturer/researcher posts and as professors over the period
1995/6 and 1998/9.
