Present simple and past simple are often used instead of present perfect and past

perfect with the construction it + be + time period + since:

It’s months since I’ve been out for a coffee anywhere.

(or: It’s been months since I’ve been out …)

It was years since I’d seen him.

(or: It had been years since I had seen him.)
